What are Medical Schools looking for at interview?
When we interview candidates for medicine we really want to know 6 things. Most of the questions you are asked will be based around these broad categories.
Are you clever enough?
This question is largely answered by your GCSEs, A-Levels and entrance exams; however expect questions in the interview to test your general intellect. You probably won't be asked to draw the Krebs cycle though!
Are you a sensible/pragmatic character?
Here we want you see if you are sensible, can you speak sensibly about things that you know nothing about? Can you hold a conversation? Can we knock you off track? Are you able to express and defend opinions?
Do you really want to do medicine?
Types of question within this range typically aim to explore your reading, research, insights and reflections on a career in medicine.
Do you really want to come to this university?
This question finds out how much research you have been doing. For example, did you read the prospectus or course brochure? Have you been to the medical school's website? Did you attend an open day or drop-in to one of the lectures? If you haven't, MedicalAdmissions.co.uk suggests that you check out the Medical Schools section, and then head down to the Diary section and find out when the next open days are!
Are you a caring/nice person?
These questions will explore your understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses, and your capacity to reflect on and change your own attitudes and behaviours.
Are you an interesting person that has a life other than academics and will make a positive contribution to student life?
This question will take you away from the relative safety of the medical course, and will dive deep into you as a person. It aims to find out what your interests are in the wider world. If you play sport, work for a charity, do lots of group activities, take the lead in any societies, or just do something totally random, this is where the interviewers will find out. Make sure you sell yourself well!
Should I prepare any answers
In line with advice from multiple medical schools' admissions departments, no! There are too many questions in the question bank to even begin consider learning them. A lot of medical schools simply don't publish their 'hidden' list of questions that they can bring in to play, so you simply can't prepare for everything.
You will do best in your interview if you listen carefully to what the interviewer asks and then try to answer their question. It's no use giving a prepared answer to the wrong question! In addition, interviewees who appear overly-coached can put themselves at a disadvantage.
