MedicalAdmissions.co.uk was setup as a partnership between two people, a current foundation year doctor, and a current medical school applicant. Our joint aim was to simplify the process you need to go through to get your place at medical school, and provide you with the tools you need to maximise your potential.

At present, the lead author for the site is Dr Robert Rigley, an FY1 from South-West England. Co-authoring the site is Dr Georgia Belam, also an FY1 from South-West England. Our Project Moderator is Dr Gareth Greenslade, a Consultant specialising in pain medicine and anaesthesia in West England.

Securing a place at medical school is a tough challenge for most applicants. In 2007 there were approximately 3 applicants for every place. Many other keen and potentially suitable applicants were put off applying after being advised by their teachers/ family, "expert" friends etc that they would stand little chance of success. Sometimes it is a natural fear of failure that holds someone back from applying. This website is about helping you, the potential doctor, increase your awareness of whether medicine is the right career choice for you. It is about levelling the playing field by taking some of the myths out of what it takes to make a successful application. It is about helping you throughout the interview process.

We want to remove some myths. In our experience it is not true that interview panels favour applications from the children of medics or from higher social classes or better schools. It is not true that the panel favours predicted or actual exam results to the exclusion of the many other things that go into being a first class doctor. In reality, selection process consists of a group of professional people who are trying as hard as they can to select the best applicants from a mountain of applications. It is not an easy job, and the enormous variation in the quality of presentation both in writing and in person makes the job even harder.
